Is passive smoking dangerous?

I couldn’t resist posting this. Yes, I’m sure it is skewed. And is possibly paid for by the tobacco companies (although Reason TV is fairly well respected so I’m not sure). But it is interesting how far the world has moved…

I’m not making a case here for going backward about smoking legislation. Regardless of the health issues, smoking is an unpleasant habit for non-smokers. Should it be legislated, though, or should we let the economy drive it (if smoke-free bars are genuinely what people want, then let bar owners make their own decisions. The public will decide and, possibly, force smoking bars to reconsider when they see people flocking to their competitors) I do think that there is a level of paranoia and political expediency that drives many of these decisions. And I don’t think that government has any place in playing nanny to adults who can make their own minds up.

Where is South Africa’s Muhammad Yunus?

I was at an event the other night that featured Jay Naidoo as the guest speaker. In his talk he told the story of Grameen Bank — a bank in Bangladesh that focuses on micro-loans to the poorest and most destitute members of society. The bank, jointly with its founder Muhammad Yunus, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

“What’s that?” I hear you ask. A bank? Nobel Peace Prize? That takes “How can we help you?” to a whole new level …
